I have cast short for some species, and long for (some ) tropical species. I rarely cast more than 80 feet in the tropics. I spend a good deal of time working on long casting but I do it more for the differing conditions like the effects of winds on my cast than for the distance .
I agree that the ability to cast distance may come in handy in a small percentange of the actual time you fish but the distance thing is a little over rated .

Hello, 2 lines, I've got an 8wt Orvis bass bug taper line on it. Since I bass fish with it a lot, I like it for shorter casts when I need the rod to load quicker. That's also the reason I chose the Launch, this particular weight and length is sweet, the action leans to the medium side which really loads it quickly with 25' casts. I think most weight forward 8 wt lines will work great. I prefer RIO and Scientific Angler. Ended up with Orvis since it was on sale, actually a nice line.
I've also found it'll rocket out a 200 grain sinking line, in fact I can cast the whole 100' without much effort other than keeping the line managed. I believe it's a RIO line but can't remember. Hope this helps!

That's a nice rod. I cast quite a few 8wt rods before I got mine. Will be taking it out this weekend to cast some giant flies. Congrats!

Check out AC Moore (if you are in the US). I got 6 sheets in Letter size of different colours for $1. I guess, as Martin said, any craft shop should have similar items.

Actually I bought most of mine at Michael's Craft (comes in many colors, search for foam sheet) in the US, but they're available in local hobby shops here in Denmark too. If unable to find these (inexpensive) sheets of foam, try Rainy's - a company which has all sorts of foam products.

I picked up some long shank, offset, size 2 hooks which were not specifically fly hooks. The offset bend needed to be straightened but they are a perfect length for what I wanted - basically a topwater gurgler lookalike for Bass. Using a yellow one I snagged 4 Bluegill in rapid succession when nothing else would work at all (dog days of summer and all that). Curiously the Bluegill don't care that they can't fit the Plipper in their mouths! Have yet to entice a bass but it's early days. Can't believe how simple these are to construct, yet the action both on top and when they dive (coz of the lip) is excellent. Let's have some more off the wall ideas.

Friday august 22 I'll be back in Denmark. Trying to get some seatrout, garfish hopefully and try to get a Mullet on North Langeland. I bought the DVD "Fly Fishng for Mullet" and as usual it looks simple. Gonna give it a try but if anyone has any suggestions i'll be glad to ty them.

Personnaly i have been using a Sage RPLXi road #6 for the last years. I like this rod because it is a little bit a stiff rod. You need that to play the fish and to cast when you have a strong wind. I mostly use floating lines or intermediate, depending on how deep I want to fish (can als be controlled by the weight of your fly). My leader is about 6 ft of .50 and next 6 ft of .25/.20.
A for reels I used a Dragonfly (lots of plastic so no rust problems). Most importance is cleaning (directly after use in Saltwater). Cleaning and greasing.

I tied some of these up, went fishing on the South Fork of the Snake River south of Jackson Hole, Wy and caught quite a few fish in an afternoon. Nice pattern.
Jay - actually it was a bamboo rod made by a friend from Naples. Great Rods with a flamed finish. Medium fast action - it's a 4/5 weight but I was fishing with a 3 weight silk line.
